Explained and Defined," Part II,

The Apostolic and Prophetic Gifts

APOSTLE: Literally, "one sent forth."

"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without some one preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are SENT? ...[emphasis on "sent" is mine]"--Romans 10:14-15 (N.I.V.)

"And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations there was given to me a 'thorn in the flesh', the messenger of Satan to buffet me."--2 Cor. 12:7, and 9-10, N.K.J.V.

"I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; FOR IN CHRIST JESUS I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU THROUGH THE GOSPEL." [emphasis mine]--2 Cor. 11:28, N.K.J.V.

"...What comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches."--2 Cor. 11:28, N.K.J.V.

"Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you."--Titus 2:15, N.K.J.V.

"...whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."--Col. 3:17, N.K.J.V.

In Romans 10:14-15 we see that God commissions apostles, evangelists, and missionaries to preach the Gospel whenever or wherever the Lord sents them. Apostles are very sensitive to God's call, leadings, and guidance.

Through 2 Cor. 12:7, 9-10, we see into the Apostle Paul's heart, which is one of great humility and dependence on God. Apostles not only preach the Gospel, but are deeply concerned with spiritual growth and discipleship of their converts, as well as with church planting and the spiritual well-being and welfare of those churches. They provide loving, parental nuture and care.

Paul confers to Titus a kind of apostolic authority. Of course, all of us are Christ's representative and ambassadors in this world.

WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS SECTION AND THE QUESTIONS AND YOU WERE STIMULATED TO THINK MORE ABOUT PROPHETIC AND APOSTOLIC REALITIES. WE WOULD ALSO STRONGLY ADVISE YOU NOT TO SEEK COUNSEL FROM EXTRA-BIBLICAL SOURCES OF PROPHECY, THE TV PSYCHICS WHO ARE PRESENTLY SO POPULAR IN AMERICAN CULTURE. THERE ARE TRUE PROPHETS OPERATING IN THE CHURCHES IN A NUMBER OF EVANGELICAL DENOMINATIONS, SO THERE IS NO NEED TO GO OUTSIDE THE CHURCHES. THE LORD CAN SEND YOU PROPHETIC WORD THROUGH A FRIEND, A MESSAGE PREACHED BY A PASTOR WHO DOESN'T KNOW YOUR SITUATION BUT NEVERTHELESS IMPARTS A WORD TO YOU BY THE SPIRIT, THE WRITTEN WORD, AND THROUGH YOUR OWN MIND AND SPIRIT WHILE IN STUDY OF THE WORD, SO YOU MAY NOT NEED TO MEET WITH AN ACTUAL PROPHET IN ORDER TO RECEIVE PROPHECY FROM GOD. PROPHECY IS IMPORTANT, AS THE APOSTLE PAUL STATES, AND OPERATES AS A SPIRITUAL GIFT IN SOME INDIVIDUALS IN THE CHURCH FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHURCH AND THE BUILDING UP OF THE MEMBERS. FOR THAT REASON IT OUGHT NOT TO BE NEGLECTED. ALWAYS CHECK IT OUT WITH SCRIPTURE, HOWEVER, AND WITH PASTORAL COUNSEL IF YOU ARE UNSURE. PLEASE EMAIL US FOR THE CORRECT ANSWERS TO THE STUDY QUESTIONS. THANK YOU.--Editor, Ronald Ginther
